Hawaiian shirts come and go as consumer tastes and fashion evolve. One popular shirt with the savvy aloha shirt crowd is the Vintage Anthurium Aloha shirt. What makes this shirt so special? Well this print, also known as Anthurium Panel, is a replica of one of the first aloha shirts ever made. It was the first shirt created by the Kamehameha Garment Company back in 1936. And over the past 78 years, it has been staple of the Kamehameha Garment Company label. So when you wear this shirt, you are actually wearing a piece of fashion history.
The Kamehameha Garment Company eventually ran into some financial difficulties and stopped producing their own shirts. In recent years they have licensed out this print to other companies and even licensed out their label. For the past several years, this shirt was produced by the Pacific Clothing Company, the same company that makes another classic shirt, the Jungle Bird or Magnum PI shirt. In 2013, this shirt's final production run came to a close. All remaining Vintage Anthurium shirts are now sold under the Diamond Head Sportswear label and whenever the existing stock runs out, this shirt will ride off into the sunset of Aloha shirt history.
It's quite amazing that a single print has had such a long historic run. What other shirt designs can withstand 8 decades of fashion trends? So we are sad to see a shirt of such historical significance go away. Soon the only way someone can buy it will be on eBay or in some boutique stores that happen to have a new or used one for sale. But in the fashion world, nothing lasts forever and we certainly look forward to seeing other vintage replica and vintage-style shirts on the market to bridge contemporary Hawaiian clothing fashions with their roots from a long-gone era.
