A luau is a traditional Hawaiian feast to celebrate special occasions like weddings, birthdays or graduations. While luaus are usually held outdoors, there's nothing to stop you from having a super successful and fun luau in your home or even apartment. All you need to do is remember these 3 things. Attire. Atmosphere. Food. If you take care of these three things, chances are quite high that your guests will have a wonderful time!
If there is one thing that will make your party feel like a real Hawaiian party, it's the clothing. Have a little fun and send out invitations to your friends that ask them (or even require them) to wear their favorite Aloha shirt or Hawaiian summer dress. This is your chance for you and your guests to go all out and wear something loud and bright an nobody will second guess you. The more colorful your attire, the more festive your party will be! And if you really want to kick things up a notch, give your guests real or fake leis or flowers of their hair (usually for the women) when they arrive.
If you're having your party outdoor like in a back yard or patio, put out some tiki torches from your local party or home improvement store. If you're having the party inside, decorate your tables with real or fake flowers, coconut candles and maybe even a pineapple from the local supermarket. Use colorful or even tropical themed paper plates, napkins and cups. And most of all, music! Few things can set the tone of a party as your guests arrive like a well selected playlist of Hawaiian or tropical themed music. Download whatever songs you want from iTunes or Amazon and have it playing even BEFORE your guests arrive to get YOU in the mood. You have only a few seconds to make a first impression and you want your guests to feel immediately transported to a tropical location the moment they step into your house.

They say the key to happiness is a happy stomach. Okay actually nobody really said that but the point is that if you want your party to be a raging success, it pays to go the extra mile and feed your guests real Hawaiian luau food. Or at least some semblance of it. You can find a ton of recipes online ranging from the extremely simple to the very sophisticated. Here are a few popular menu items to get your Google (or Bing or Yahoo) search started. Kalua Pig. Lomi Lomi Salmon. Lau Lau. Poke. Haupia. Poi. Shoyu Chicken. Grilled or Fried Mahimahi.
So there you have it. It's that simple. Attire. Atmosphere. Food. If you do even a mediocre job on all three of these key points, you and your guests will have a good time. If you do a great job at these things, there's a pretty good chance you will become a living legend. Just remember that fun is all in the mind. You can almost guarantee a successful party even before it begins by teasing your guests with anticipation in your invitation announcements about wearing Aloha attire. If your party looks like fun, sounds like fun and tastes like fun, it absolutely will be a ton of fun!
We'd love to see pictures of your luau or Hawaiian themed party! Aloha!
